People of Rosscarbery- Denis Nolan
19/04/2020 | People of RosscarberyWow, what a week! To close the week, tonight’s “People of Ross” featured business is Denis Nolan and the fantastic Nolan’s Bar. The pub is beautiful and the bright yellow and red façade of the pub is truly iconic. It catches the eye the moment you arrive in the main square of Rosscarbery coming from the low road past St. Fachtna’s Cathedral and it is plum centre of the square, a great meeting place.
The flowers are always plentiful and beautiful, Denis can be seen maintaining them daily and maintaining and watering all the other flowers around his own at the same time, a complete gentleman! Many a visitor will remember Nolan’s and when you 1st mention where you are from they will recount a story about a visit to Ross and to Nolan’s. If the flowers are the feature in the summer the 2 beautiful fireplaces are the feature in the winter months where Nolan’s is equally appealing. You could walk in at any time of the day or night in the winter and it is as if the fire has been lightning for hours and the bar is cosy.
Like the 2 other wonderful pubs music plays a regular part of Nolan’s traditional feel and Denis’s Traditional Session’s on a Thursday evening during the summer are famous! Whether from overseas or from the locality it is a “must do” past-time to visit one of these sessions.
As mentioned previously, another regular occurrence is seeing folks leave Nolan’s and the pub’s of Ross and wander over the road to our wonderful restaurants for dinner, drink in hand. Denis, Pascal & Sean will not be tearing after you, as the restaurants are happy to see you bring your drink in and they happily drop the glasses back at the end of the evening. It’s magic and it is what Ross is all about, community!
Back in 2014 we at the hotel welcomed a group of overseas travel agents for a reconnaissance trip and, whilst they had a little pub crawl of the bars in Ross, on this occasion, they settled in Nolan’s. The craic was mighty and as a result Rosscarbery is talked about all over the world thanks to the hospitality they received. So much so that they all still talk about it and talk about “that night” in Nolan’s when we meet them at trade fairs in London, Berlin and beyond.
We also have a US group that brings their musicians with them to have a little session in Nolan’s whenever they visit. When we phone Denis and say “John is coming” it is sorted and they are welcomed with open arms. On one occasion we have even experienced a singing dog…. Not a word of a lie!
Denis serves a beautiful hearty lunch in the Pub throughout the week which you must try and there is no better perch for watching the world go by than an outdoor table on the Square💚🇮🇪 Thank you Denis🙏 And folks please stop in when staying in Rosscarbery 👍
